A school, a church and a garden
Laurels to all

DARTS & LAURELS

LAUREL: From Pat Archambault, superintendent of the Dryden Central School District. To Dryden school board member Brian June, athletic booster president Russ Kowalski and other Dryden community member volunteers who worked on the high school gym "School Spirit" project. These folks spent countless hours on this project which has given an entirely new look to our gym.

LAUREL: From Judy Saul of the Community Dispute Resolution Center. To Cornell's Organizational Development Services office for nominating CDRC for the Business & Technology Park's Community Service Award. The award is especially meaningful to CDRC as we celebrate 20 years of service to Tompkins County. Thanks to Cornell Real Estate and John Majeroni for providing these generous awards.

LAUREL: From Irene Eastman. To Asbury Church, for passing out ice cold bottled water at Lansing's ball park, free, Saturday, July 26. We all thank you!

LAUREL: From Dave Heck of Lansing. To Ithaca Time Warner for finally making arguably the most appropriate and worthwhile channel added in recent years: OLN (Outdoor Life Network) available. Cyclists were treated to first class, twice daily coverage of the recently concluded Tour De France in its entirety.

LAUREL: From Harriet Becker, president of the Ithaca Children's Garden board. To those who helped make the 2003 "Paint Out" activity a success. Thanks go to Suzanne Kolodziej, Mary Alyce Kobler, Aireka and Kody, Dan and Rachel from Cornell Circle K, Leigh MacDonald, Youth Horticulture Apprentices, Adria Carter and Rico Swails, and Katrina Morse for making it all happen. Many thanks to the Ithaca Farmers' Market for providing the perfect venue. Special thanks to Target Stores for sponsoring the event and donating all the paint and drawing supplies for kids to take home with them.

LAUREL: From Betsy Root of Ithaca. To The Journal for its improved coverage of the GrassRoots Festival this year. In past years, the focus always seemed to be on aspects of the festival that were negative and relatively irrelevant, such as mischief makers and complaints from local residents. I hope this means in the future this great event will get the positive attention it deserves. Have readers been informed that it is a benefit festival, with proceeds going to community arts and education projects and AIDS work? It is attended by people of all ages and walks of life. An atmosphere of friendship prevails, where people are really courteous to one another. Maybe it's a trickle down effect from the organizers, the host band, Donna the Buffalo, and some of the repeat performers, who are like a big extended family enjoying an annual reunion of folks who really care for each other. And it is superbly well run, given the immense turnout. I hope next year there will be even more coverage of the attractions and fun events that abound at GrassRoots.

LAUREL: To all of the people in Dryden who make our town a special place. To Jennifer Glaab and the Dryden Recreation Committee for bringing an enjoyable summer to the people of Dryden with concerts in the park, games, sports competitions and activities all spring and summer long; to Brian June for his inspiration to spruce up the Dryden High School gym and the community for supporting the fund-raisers that are paying for this; to The Ithaca Journal for finally having articles about Dryden published; to the Southworth Library for all the wonderful programs they bring to the children in the community; to the volunteers who created the lovely new Time Square Project which is such an addition to our village center.

Cheers to all of the folks in Dryden who so enthusiastically support all of these innovative activities coming to our town and the many committed volunteers who make it happen.

LAUREL: From the Tioga County Council on the Arts. To all of those who helped make the Hickory Smoked Blues III concert such a resounding success. Over 150 volunteers gave their time and talent to bring this wonderful event to Tioga County.

Special thanks to the main presenter, Visual Credit Union, as well as the "B" stage presenter, Best Buy. Also, thanks to sponsors: Audio Classics, Chemung Canal Trust Company, Matthew Chevrolet and Tioga State Bank.
