LANSING -- The Village of Lansing
Planning Board unanimously approved a special permit to
construct a 39,470-square-foot building in the Cornell Business
and Technology Park during a Planning Board meeting Tuesday.
The two-story building, to be located at 36 Thornwood Drive,
will house Kionix Inc., a maker of microscopic-sized mechanical
devices. Kionix already occupies one building in the business
park at 22 Thornwood Drive.
Cornell Real Estate Director John Majeroni said because of
several new businesses that plan to move into the park within
the year and the expansion of businesses, "hundreds of
additional high-technology jobs will come to the business park
and Tompkins County."
Construction is expected to begin within the month and be
completed by July.
The new building will house the office, mechanical and
laboratory space that is currently located at 22 Thornwood
Drive, said Herman Sieverding of Integrated Acquisition and
Development, which manages the business park.
Earlier this month, Kionix was acquired by Calient Networks
in Silicon Valley for an undisclosed amount.
Calient will move into Kionix's location in the park, while
Kionix -- under the new name of Calient Optical Components Inc.
--will move to the newly-approved building on the adjacent
4.1-acre lot.
Although the Planning Board approved the special permit for
the structure without debate, Planning Board Chairman Ned Hickey
listed three conditions for approval -- approval of a drainage
plan by the village engineer and approval of lighting and
landscaping plans by the Planning Board.
Sieverding explained that the building will house three
sections -- offices, a machinery room and a "clean
room" laboratory to create its products.
The new Kionix building is the third business park project to
be approved by the village's Planning Board this month. On Oct.
9, the board approved unanimously the construction of a
92,000-square-foot office building on Thornwood Road and an
amendment to add a second floor of 10,000 square feet of office
space on Brown Road to a project approved by the board in August
1998. The structure was approved at 40,000 square feet.
Tim Colbert, a partner of Integrated Acquisition and
Development, said the construction on the other Thornwood
project is expected to begin in January and be completed by the
end of 2001. The Brown Road building is slated to begin in
December and completed by July, he said.
