Advion BioSciences and Waters Corporation to Co-Market Automated Nanoelectrospray™ to Life Science Market: Deal Advances Advion's Automated Nanoelectrospray Market Initiative

MONTREAL, June 09, 2003 — Advion BioSciences Inc., a leading provider of mass spectrometry (MS) services and products to the pharmaceutical industry, and Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT), based in Milford, Mass., today announced a non-exclusive agreement to jointly promote their MS products to the life science research market. The co-marketing agreement was announced at the 51st annual meeting of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS), held at Le Palais des Congrès de Montréal June 8 through June 12.

The agreement is part of Advion’s global market initiative to introduce the benefits of automated nanoelectrospray through strategic alliances with leading MS instrument manufacturers. Waters Corporation acquired U.K.-based Micromass Ltd. in 1997, establishing a market leadership position with combined strengths in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and MS technologies.

Under the agreement, Advion and Waters will jointly market and co-promote their electrospray products and ensure compatibility of Advion’s NanoMate™ 100 automated nanoelectrospray system with the Waters® Micromass® MS Technologies mass spectrometers, including the Micromass LCT™, Quattro II™, Quattro micro™, Quattro Ultima™, Q-TofTM I™, Q-Tof II, Q-Tof micro™ and Q-Tof Ultima™ lines of liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) systems. Advion and Waters will jointly coordinate the sales, marketing and support of the world’s first fully automated chip-based nanoelectrospray MS system. The agreement also defines the terms under which Advion and Waters will cooperate to develop and integrate Advion’s ChipSoftTM software with Waters MassLynx® software for seamless and flexible automated nanoelectrospray operation. Financial terms were not disclosed.

"The versatility and efficiency of our NanoMate 100 and ESI Chip™ technology are an excellent complement to Waters’ portfolio of electrospray MS systems. We are proud to be working with a recognized industry leader and innovator to bring automated nanoelectrospray to the life science market," said Jack Henion, Ph.D., Advion’s president and CEO.

"We are very pleased to deliver the power of automated nanoelectrospray to our LC/MS system users," said Brian Smith, senior director, pharmaceutical and life sciences market development at Waters. "Advion’s NanoMate enhances the speed and performance of applications in proteomics and small molecule analyses and will help us provide cutting-edge solutions to meet the continually evolving needs of our customers."

Automated Nanoelectrospray Provides Control of Both Analysis Speed and Data Quality

Advion’s NanoMate 100 robotic system and disposable ESI Chip allow users to take full advantage of the capabilities of electrospray mass spectrometry for life science applications. The NanoMate system enables a user to either speed analysis for increased throughput for small molecule and peptide mapping applications, or slow acquisition time for proteomics and metabolite identification applications where greater sample information is required. Key advantages include higher sample throughput, low sample consumption, high sensitivity, reduced analysis cost and the ability to derive meaningful results from a very small sample.
